Puppies and Children: 10 Essential Rules for a Safe Home

Growing up with a dog can offer children magical memories, empathy, and companionship. However, young puppies and young children both lack impulse control, making adult supervision and clear boundaries essential.

10 Ground Rules for Children and Puppies

  1. 100% Active Adult Supervision: Never leave young children alone with a puppy, even for a minute.
  2. Respect Sleeping & Eating Zones: Teach children never to approach a puppy in their crate, on their bed, or while eating.
  3. The "Tree" Pose for Biting: If the puppy becomes mouthy, teach children to fold their arms, stand still like a tree, look at the sky, and remain quiet.
  4. Gentle Stroking Only: Show children how to stroke gently along the puppy's side or chest—avoid patting on top of the head.
  5. No Running or Screaming: High-pitched screaming triggers a puppy's natural predatory chase drive.
  6. Four Paws on the Floor for Fuss: Children should only pet the puppy when all four paws are grounded.
  7. No Picking Up the Puppy: Prevent dropped puppy accidents by keeping petting sessions grounded on the floor.
  8. Tidy Up Small Toys: Keep Lego, dolls, and action figures picked up so the puppy doesn't swallow plastic parts.
  9. Involve Kids in Positive Training: Let children give cue words ("Sit!") and hand over kibble rewards under guidance.
  10. Respect "I Need Space" Signs & Teach the "Consent Test": Teach children that when a puppy turns away or retreats to their pen, crate, or bed, they must be left alone. Teach kids the 3-Second Consent Test: stroke the puppy gently for 3 seconds, then pause and remove your hand. If the puppy leans in, nudges, or moves closer, they are consenting to more affection. If they turn away, look elsewhere, shake off, or stay still, respect their choice and give them space!
