Hazards in October

Always consult with your vet if you suspect your dog has been exposed to any of these dangers.

Critical Risk

An influx of chocolate (toxic) and sweets containing Xylitol (highly toxic artificial sweetener) in the house.

Vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, seizures (chocolate/xylitol), or signs of blockage from wrappers.

Indoors, near front doors, or during trick-or-treating walks.

Keep all trick-or-treat spoils well out of reach. Xylitol can cause a fatal drop in blood sugar.

High Risk

Plentiful on the ground, causing toxicity and severe intestinal blockages if swallowed.

Vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, lethargy, and signs of choking or intestinal blockage.

Woodlands, parks, and beneath Oak or Horse Chestnut trees.

Keep an eye on what your dog is sniffing or picking up on woodland walks. Teach a solid 'drop it' cue.

Critical Risk

Autumn rain brings out wild fungi, some of which are highly toxic and can cause organ failure.

Vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, drooling, uncoordinated movement, seizures, or jaundice (yellowing gums).

Damp woodland, fields, and even domestic gardens after autumn rain.

Do not let your dog eat wild mushrooms. If ingested, take a photo of the fungi and rush to the vet.

Critical Risk

Ethylene glycol is sweet-tasting but highly toxic to dogs. Even a small lick can cause fatal kidney failure.

Lethargy, vomiting, uncoordinated 'drunken' movement, seizures, and increased urination or thirst.

Driveways, roadsides, garages, and car parks where leaks or spills may occur.

Keep products securely stored, clean up spills immediately, and wash your dog's paws after walking near driveways.
